Ron Thaniel is Vice President of Legislative Affairs with ITS America. He is a nationally recognized urban transportation expert with nearly two decades of experience in Washington, DC, New York and with states and cities across the United States on transportation solutions that enhance economic growth, mobility, and sustainability.
Thaniel is Founding Principal of Thaniel Consulting—an urban transportation public and government affairs consulting startup located at the nexus of national policy in Washington, DC and in one of the world’s great laboratories for urban design and mobility innovation—New York City. He previously served as Deputy Secretary for Transportation under New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, where he advised on the largest investment in transit in New York history. Prior to that, Thaniel was Executive Director of the National Association of City Transportation Officials, where he advised large cities on federal transportation policy. Thaniel served as Assistant Executive Director for The United States Conference of Mayors from 2002 to 2007 and from 2008 to 2011. In this role, he led transportation policy and represented mayors before Congress and federal agencies and before international organizations and governments.
Earlier in his career, Thaniel was Director of Government Affairs – Northeast United States for Amtrak, and transportation aide to former Minneapolis Mayor Sharon Sayles Belton. Featured by Governing Magazine as “The Man Behind U.S. Transportation’s Future,” he has served on executive committees of national transportation organizations. Thaniel holds a B.A. from Morgan State University and an M.P.A. from Hamline University.
