LL Cool J and Jazmine Sullivan Withdraw from Wawa Welcome America Concert
In a significant display of solidarity with labor rights, renowned artists LL Cool J and Jazmine Sullivan have opted out of performing at the Wawa Welcome America Fourth of July concert in Philadelphia. Their decisions come in light of an ongoing strike involving the city’s largest municipal workers’ union, which has entered its fifth day.
Artists Stand Firm
LL Cool J announced his decision via Instagram, expressing his unwillingness to “cross a picket line” while city workers are advocating for better wages and working conditions. “I understand there’s a lot going on in Philadelphia right now, and I never, ever, ever want to disappoint my fans, especially Philadelphia,” he stated.
The hip-hop icon emphasized his long-standing connection to the city, stating: “There’s absolutely no way that I can perform, cross a picket line, and pick up money when I know that people are out there fighting for a living wage.” He also expressed hope for a quick resolution between the city’s administration and the striking workers.
Jazmine Sullivan, also a prominent Philadelphia native, echoed this sentiment in her Instagram story, announcing her support for the strike and the workers of DC33, the city’s largest blue-collar union, which includes those working in sanitation, police dispatch, and various other municipal roles.
Union Leaders Support the Artists
Greg Boulware, the president of DC33, praised LL Cool J’s commitment to labor rights, calling it a “powerful testament” to his respect for workers. Boulware highlighted the significance of LL Cool J’s actions in raising awareness regarding workers’ rights and the ongoing labor movement.
Upon learning of Sullivan’s withdrawal from the concert, Boulware expressed his gratitude, noting, “It’s truly refreshing to witness a celebrity of her stature and a native Philadelphian recognizing and valuing the tireless dedication of municipal workers.”
Ongoing Negotiations and City Response
As discussions between DC 33 and the city have stalled, Mayor Cherelle Parker stated that while the city’s negotiation team is open to meeting, union leadership has declined further talks as of Thursday. Mayor Parker acknowledged LL Cool J’s choice and affirmed that he is always welcome in Philadelphia.
“I respect Jazmine’s decision, and understand her desire to see our City unified,” Mayor Parker expressed in a statement, underscoring her support for the city’s efforts to maintain unity during these challenging times.
