San Francisco Schools Transform Parking Lots into Fundraising Opportunities During Outside Lands
As the Outside Lands Music Festival gathers crowds at Golden Gate Park, local schools have ingeniously turned their parking lots into profitable fundraising venues. The initiative not only caters to the needs of festival-goers but also supports essential programs in public education.
Cameron Lutz, attending his first festival, expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “I’m a public school kid, and I think funding for public education is super important. It’s impressive how San Francisco remains dedicated to these efforts despite its challenges.” He, along with his girlfriend, Sydney Sosa, took part in the fundraising efforts at Lawton Alternative School, opting to pay for parking before trekking a mile and a half to the event.
Community Involvement
Sosa highlighted the community spirit surrounding the fundraising events, sharing, “Someone posted about it online, and a bunch of local schools are renting out spaces in their lots. Parents volunteer their time to make it happen.” Lutz, reflecting on the current state of public education, remarked, “Supporting those in need, especially in education, is crucial, and this fundraiser is a great way to contribute.”
The couple, both Bay Area natives, expressed their excitement about the festival. “This is going to be my third year attending, and it’s always such a fun experience,” Sosa noted, while Lutz added, “I’m finally getting to enjoy this festival after completing my undergrad at San Jose State. I couldn’t make it here before, but I’m thrilled to be part of it now.”
Years of Tradition
According to Tim Murakami, the PTA secretary at Lawton Alternative School, this fundraising campaign has been ongoing for nearly a decade. “In past years, we had to promote our availability extensively. However, this year was different—we sold out all our pre-sale parking spots.” Murakami shared that they successfully filled all 75 parking spaces during the three-day festival.
Generating significant revenue, he explained, “This fundraiser is expected to raise over $10,000. This money is crucial for funding various school activities throughout the year and is one of our largest fundraising endeavors.” He further detailed how these funds are allocated, mentioning that they support teacher stipends and provide resources for extracurricular activities and sports programs.
Seeing the community rally together to support educational initiatives while enjoying the music festival is incredibly rewarding for him. “It’s wonderful to witness everyone coming out, having a good time, and contributing to our schools,” Murakami added, embodying the spirit of community in San Francisco.
