San Francisco Schools Transform Parking Lots into Fundraising Opportunities during Outside Lands Festival
As the Outside Lands Music Festival unfolds at Golden Gate Park, local schools are seizing the opportunity to enhance their funding by utilizing their parking spaces for concertgoers. This innovative approach not only provides revenue for educational institutions but also offers festival visitors a practical solution for parking.
Cameron Lutz, a first-time festival attendee, shared his thoughts on the importance of public school funding, highlighting the resilience of the San Francisco community in maintaining educational support amidst challenging times. “I’m a public school kid, and I think funding for public education is super important,” he stated.
Accompanied by his girlfriend, Sydney Sosa, Lutz contributed to the fundraiser at Lawton Alternative School. They parked their car in the school’s supervised lot and walked approximately 1.5 miles to the festival. “Someone posted about it, and it’s great that there are multiple schools in the area renting out their parking lots, with parents volunteering their time,” Sosa explained.
Support for Education
For Lutz, supporting education resonates deeply. “Public school education has really faltered in the last couple of years,” he remarked. “Supporting education for those in need is the least we can do.” Both he and Sosa, who have strong ties to the Bay Area, enjoy attending the festival, marking it as a highlight of their summer activities.
“This is my third year coming here; it’s always a fun time,” Sosa added, while Lutz expressed his excitement at finally experiencing the festival after earning his undergraduate degree from San Jose State University.
Successful Fundraiser for Lawton Alternative School
Tim Murakami, the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) secretary for Lawton Alternative School, noted that this fundraising initiative has been in place for nearly a decade. He shared the success that this year’s event has seen, stating, “This year, we sold out all presales.”

The fundraising efforts are crucial for the school, with Murakami stating, “This is going to raise a little over $10,000. All of that money helps fund activities throughout the year. I want to say this is our second or third biggest fundraiser.” The funds will assist in providing stipends for teachers, equipment needs, and supporting various extracurricular activities and sports programs.
Murakami expressed his satisfaction with the turnout, saying, “Seeing everybody come out, and support the schools as well as have fun, is a wonderful thing for the community.” The collaboration between the schools and the community during the Outside Lands festival highlights the ongoing commitment to supporting education in the San Francisco area.
