At Home, a well-known home decor retailer with over 200 stores across the United States, has announced that it is filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. This decision, made public on Monday, is aimed at restructuring the company’s finances to eliminate $2 billion in debt while securing an additional $200 million in capital to support its turnaround efforts.
According to court documents, the retailer, based in Plano, Texas, is expected to close 26 of its locations nationwide by the end of September. The company, which is owned by investment firm Hellman & Friedman, has faced mounting challenges in recent months due to increased tariffs and supply chain issues that have adversely affected its business.
Financial Struggles and Restructuring Efforts
Following a missed interest payment on May 15, At Home entered a forbearance agreement with its lenders, paving the way for the current bankruptcy filing. In this agreement, the retailer expressed its intention to transition ownership to its lenders, who collectively hold more than 95% of the company’s debt.
CEO Brad Weston stated that At Home is “operating against the backdrop of an increasingly dynamic and rapidly evolving trade environment as we navigate the impact of tariffs.” He emphasized that the steps being taken are crucial to bolstering the company’s competitive stance amidst ongoing market volatility. Weston believes these moves will enhance the long-term resilience of the business.
Originally established as Garden Ridge Pottery in 1979, At Home expanded rapidly, boasting 260 locations in 40 states and offering a wide array of home goods including furniture, rugs, bedding, and kitchenware. However, in its Chapter 11 filing, the company revealed significant financial strains, noting the closure of six stores over the past year. Economic factors like inflation and tariffs have put “significant pressure” on their revenue streams.
Consumer Demand and Market Challenges
Neil Saunders, a managing director at GlobalData, commented on the situation, indicating that At Home has been facing a decline in consumer demand for home furnishings, attributed to low consumer confidence and a sluggish housing market. He warned that these unfavorable dynamics may persist in the near future.
The voluntary Chapter 11 proceedings are taking place at the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware as part of a larger trend of financial distress impacting several major retailers, including The Container Store and Big Lots, which also filed for bankruptcy in the previous year.
